Uganda-Based Training for Program Staff
PhD Programs at Makerere
Professional staff who have competed Masters degrees at Johns Hopkins are encouraged to enroll in PhD programs at Makerere University. A sandwich PhD program is offered, where Makerere University awards the degree, but under a Memorandum of Understanding with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH), which allows candidates to also take advanced courses and receive mentoring at JHSPH. The sandwich PhD avoids the high cost of tuition associated with US-based programs (thus enabling the Program to support more doctoral candidates) and helps build the Makerere PhD program.

US students and Fellows have also been given the opportunity for work-study in Rakai. In 2005-2006, eight students were on placement with RHSP, and the following is a list of fellows participating in RHSP research.
