ARV SECTION

RHSP aims at providing high quality comprehensive HIV services that meet national and international standards to all clients receiving care and treatment. We started provision of antiretroviral therapy (ART), in April 2004 with only one clinic and 11 outreaches within Rakai district. As of now, more than 35 clinics have been established and only 3 outreaches have been maintained. The mother clinic (RHSP-Kalisizo clinic) acts as a model clinic for the district with different specialized services and highly skilled personnel providing supervision, mentorship, monitoring & evaluation to other clinics. All this is funded by the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

This started providing comprehensive HIV care and treatment in April 2004 with 206 patients. As of now, it extends services to over 2300 patients that receive cotrimoxizole prophylaxis and ART refills as well as CD4 cell and viral load monitoring. The clinic manned by a multidisciplinary team of experienced doctors, clinical officers and nurses, this serves as a referral centre for other clinics in the district. Services provided include but not restricted to the following;

Rakai district is among the five districts in the country with the highest HIV incidence and burden. This is majorly attributed to the many landing sites within the district and the existence of Uganda-Tanzania boarder. Over 35000 HIV positive patients have been enrolled into care since 2004.

Starting 2013, RHSP became the HIV implementing partner for Rakai district. The district health team in conjunction with RHSP takes a led in the programming of HIV prevention, care and treatment and RHSP as an implementing partner is tasked with technical, logistical and financial support as well as capacity building for the district staff working with ART clinics in the different health facilities through ongoing mentorships, monitoring & evaluation, trainings and continuous medical education. In total, there are 35 health facilities, both private and Government owned, providing HIV care and treatment services
